Monica Helms created the first transgender pride flag in 1999 as a symbol of trans diversity, identity and liberation. Helms grew up in Arizona, served in the U.S. Navy, and later debuted the flag at a Pride parade in Phoenix in 2000. She explained the meaning behind the colors: “The stripes at the top and bottom are light blue, the traditional color for baby boys. The stripes next to them are pink, the traditional color for baby girls. The stripe in the middle is white, for those who are inters
